Lip fillers are a popular cosmetic treatment that can help to enhance the appearance of the lips. But how long do the results last? The experts at Body+Beauty Lab can tell you that the results are temporary and that when the treatment dissolves, patients will notice that their lips return to their normal appearance. The skin of the mouth and lips will return to its normal state without sagging or stretching, although this change will occur slowly. As the filler fades, your lips may look somewhat aged as the normal aging process persists.
This usually happens 12 to 18 months after you contract them, depending on your metabolism. You may need routine retouching treatments to maintain the desired volume. The great thing about injectable fillers is that your professional will have full control over the exact amount of filler applied to each area of your lips to achieve the desired look. If migration occurs and the dermal filler is in the wrong compartment of your lips, this can take several months or years to degrade sufficiently to allow a clear lip border to be seen again.
A surgical lip augmentation is great if you've been injected before and you're ready for a permanent change. Filler folds are typically caused by overfilling of the lip and the inadequacy of the lip tissue to maintain the correct position. Unfortunately, it's not possible to make injectable lip fillings last longer once you've received them. Lip filler migration generally occurs as a result of injecting too much filler into one area and “bleeding” elsewhere.
If you have a BLT allergy, your healthcare provider may give you a nerve block injection to numb your lips. Some find that their lips return to normal after a few months, while others don't need another injection for more than a full year. We asked board-certified dermatologists Michael Lin, MD, and Nina Naidu, MD, as well as nurse practitioner Breana Wheeler (who performed my injections) to give us information on everything related to lip injections. Wheeler explained that since my lips are on the thinner side of the spectrum, it wouldn't be natural to inject a large amount of filler into them, especially in a single visit. It is best to wait to eat until the injection of the topical anesthetic or nerve block has disappeared so as not to accidentally bite your lips or alter the filling. In conclusion, lip fillers are temporary and will eventually return to their normal state after treatment.
However, it is important to note that this process can take several months or even years depending on how much filler was used and where it was injected. It is also important to go to a reputable place for lip injections in order to minimize any risks associated with this procedure.
